HMS Association Treasure William III 1696 Shilling in Sterling Mount and Chain
$650.00

Total weight of piece is 16.2g. Chain is marked 'sterling'. William III Shilling 1696 (REF: S.3497) professionally mounted on sterling silver mount and chain. Legend of mount inscribed "TREASURE FROM 'ASSOCIATION' 1707" (See Photo 4). The chain and mount show a handsome antique patina in VF condition. Coin in gF. Includes a small jewellery box. The coin was likely mounted sometime after the Sotheby's sale* in the late 60s-early 70s. There is no accompanying documentation to guarantee the coin was recovered from Association but the piece shows wear, style, and condition consistent with other verified similar examples online** and my assessment of the piece is that it is authentic.

*See Sotheby's, Treasure Recovered from the Site of HMS Association, London, 14 July 1969. 80.05 grams total, box 85 x 65mm. Recovered from HMS Association shipwreck, sank Gilstone Rock, Isles of Scilly, 1707; pendant mount added later.

**See TimeLine Auctions February 2017 Antiquities & Coins Auction Lot 1238

This piece is ex. Noonans Mayfair, London.

HMS Association was a 90-gun second-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, launched at Portsmouth Dockyard in 1697. She served with distinction at the capture of Gibraltar, and was lost in 1707 by grounding on the Isles of Scilly in the greatest maritime disaster of the age. The wreck is a Protected Wreck managed by Historic England. The wreck site was rediscovered in 1964 by the Naval Air Command Sub Aqua Club. Members of the club recovered gold coins, a bronze cannon and many other artefacts from the Association site.

More than 2,000 coins and other artefacts recovered from the wreck site were auctioned by Sotheby’s in July 1969.

Alexander I Balas AR Tetradrachm Antiochia on Orontes 148/7 BC - gVF - KNOWN DIE
$2,000.00

This coin is a fascinating type of the Alexander I Balas Tetradrachm with an exceptionally rare monogram variety. This monogram seems to only have been produced with a single die, as all known images of coins bearing this monogram share the same engraving. The bottom of this description further outlines my findings and research.

SELEUKID KINGS OF SYRIA. Alexander I Balas, 152-145 BC. Tetradrachm, Antiochia on the Orontes, SE 165 = 148/7. Diademed head of Alexander I to right. Rev. Dutch East India Company Cochin Gold Fanam c.1663-1724 - aEF
$250.00

INDIA. DUTCH COCHIN.

Gold Fanam, Circa 1663-1724.

This gold fanam, struck in Cochin, is also known as a Rasi, a term used for gold fanams minted along the Malabar Coast. The Dutch East India Company (VOC), which operated a mint in Cochin, often depicted Hindu deities such as Kali on their coins. These images were not chosen for religious reasons, but rather as a practical strategy. By imitating local coinage, VOC coins were more easily accepted in regional markets. The deities held no spiritual significance for the Dutch; their use was entirely pragmatic, aimed at facilitating trade and integration into the local economy.

Circa 1663-1724. Obv: Human figure resembling Kali. Rev: Horizontal J with 12 dots over three lines.

Weight: 0.40g.

Diameter: 8mm.

Composition: Gold.
